Database Size Reduction in Preparation for SAP RISE
A Utility Company struggled to migrate to RISE or cloud due to a 5TB database and projected growth. Partnering with Microsoft, Auritas implemented a 12-week archiving strategy that reduced the database by 80%, cutting costs by $1 million and enabling a faster, lower-risk migration with room to invest in innovation.
-
80% size reduction
Reduce source system from 5TB to 1TB.
-
$1M in savings
Over $1 Million in estimated savings from reducing data footprint.
-
SAP RISE Readiness
A smaller infrastructure footprint helped prepared for SAP RISE.
The Challenge
he Utilities Company faced significant challenges in considering a move from their on-premises system to RISE or a cloud solution. The economics of the transition didn’t justify the investment, as their existing 5TB system demanded a sizable infrastructure to manage both compute and storage requirements.
Furthermore, the inclusion of non-production systems added complexity and costs to the overall structure. When accounting for anticipated growth, the projected increase in resource needs further reduced the potential benefits of a cloud migration, making the shift less viable and economically sustainable for the company.
The Solution
Auritas implemented a 12-week program in partnership with Microsoft to prepare the Utilities Company for their S/4 RISE migration. This strategic initiative focused on reducing the database size through a comprehensive data archiving strategy.
By effectively archiving legacy data, Auritas minimized the source database, resulting in a smaller target environment that required less storage and compute resources. This reduction led to a shorter migration timeline, as there was significantly less data to transfer, and fewer objects involved lowered the overall project risk.
The optimized database size also helped reduce infrastructure and project service costs, making the transition to the new system more efficient and economically viable for this Utility Company.

Results & Benefits
