Grainger's Journey to S/4HANA with Data Archiving Strategy
Grainger partnered with Auritas to address performance issues caused by rapid growth and a multi-TB database. By optimizing its archiving program and implementing a data volume management strategy, Grainger cut data volume by 60%, while reducing ongoing growth by 85%. This enabled a faster, low-downtime S/4HANA migration and delivered $4.4 million in savings over three years.
-
$4.4M Cumulative Savings
Reduced HANA sizing from an estimated 21 TB appliance to a 7 TB appliance.
-
NetZero Migration Downtime
Data management techniques helps achieve NetZero HANA migration downtime.
-
85% Ongoing Growth Reduction
Ongoing data archiving strategies helped reduce ongoing database growth.
The Challenge
The recent implementation of Canadian and Mexican operations has put considerable strain on processing times, despite the archiving implementation carried out in 2008. However, Auritas identified opportunities for optimization based on previous programs.
The database presented significant challenges. With multiple tables containing over 10 billion rows, 86 application servers were needed in the production environment. The database size was 30 terabytes, increasing by 0.5 terabytes per month.
The primary challenge is swiftly reducing the database space by half by optimizing the existing archiving program to meet the organization's urgent needs.
The Solution
Auritas worked with Grainger to develop a cohesive data volume management and governance plan. With a well-developed data archiving strategy, the company would address archiving issues now and schedule archiving, allowing for a reduced growth rate and cost reductions related to storage.
This approach accelerated the move to S/4, allowing the company to move a more manageable database. It also allowed Grainger to save costs during the migration and in the long term when operating in the new system.
